Important Update: New Visa Classifications for Lighters
Get ready for changes impacting non-citizens involved in lightering operations! Starting September 5, 2024, two new visa options will be available for those transiting the U.S. to join vessels engaged in foreign trade and lightering activities (ship-to-ship transfer of liquid cargo). These visas allow for stays of up to 180 days—a significant increase from the current 29-day limit.
The C-4 visa allows transit to join a lightering vessel, while the D-3 visa permits crewmembers to perform lightering activities. A combined C-4/D-3 visa will also be available. This streamlined approach offers greater flexibility and convenience for those involved in this specialized industry.
